{Miri, 24th May 2021} – Miri Parenting Info Group, in collaboration with Realfun Learning Center and Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Bhd is organising Sarawak’s first coding challenge that brings family together to solve community problems through technology. Program will be officiated by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Sarawak, YB Datuk Sebatian Ting on the 22nd of May through Facebook Live.
FamilySquad is a 3-month program to bring family members together and solve community problems through technology (especially Artificial intelligence). During the program, all members need to work together to find a problem that they want to solve among the community, create a prototype technology (including Artificial Intelligence, Mobile App) to solve the problem, and pitch their solution in the final presentation.
“If there is one thing that we can challenge ourselves to do, that is to learn new skills, and stay away from our comfort zone”, said Thomas Ngu, chairman of Miri Parenting Info Group. “As a father, the risks of running a family are all sorts and all over the places! But if we stay in the comfort zone, we will never see the “risk” and the need to learn anything that we feel necessary.” He adds: “With the advancement of technology, we are given the only choice to use it or have nothing from it. so, if the future solutions are here now, why are we waiting to be told what we need to do, instead of waiting for things to happen, we can, as a parent, take the lead to guide and grow with our family and kids together to participate in the community events, to solve the challenges or to reduce the issues around us. Remember, some experts said, raising a child needs a village. so, we have to do it together! I shall hope to see more parents rise to the call and jump for the goal!”
First cohort of the program will start 22nd of May. Each family need to form a team. Each team consists of minimum 1 adult (can be parent or lega guardian) and 1 child (17 years old or younger). Maximum per team is 6 members. There will be no registration/joining fee, but each team is required to pay a refundable deposit of RM50 for Miri Parenting Info Group members, or RM600 for non members. Participants will be equipped with necessary hardwares and devices including laptop to help complete the project.
Total 12 workshops will be organised weekly for all the teams to learn various techniques to identify problems & solutions, build apps, debugging and prepare for pitch. These workshops will be mostly virtual over Zoom, with a mix of physical workshops if allowable depending on pandemic situations.
At the end of the program, each team will get to present the work and selected teams will get to win prizes worth up to RM5,000 per cohort.
